With “Tales of Brass and Wood,” the Florens Ensemble presents a fantastic and surprising new program with a variety of distinctive musical colours.
At first glance, the Baroque trumpet and the dulcian, a precursor to the modern bassoon, may seem like an exotic combination. However, this combination has been quite common since the second half of the sixteenth century. Both instruments played significant roles in the vibrant music scene that primarily unfolded in churches and at the royal court. Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643), the celebrated keyboardist of that era, accompanied the trumpet virtuoso Girolamo Fantini (1600-1675) during a private concert for Cardinal Ottoboni in Rome. Fantini composed the very first sonatas for trumpet and basso continuo. The early solo repertoire for the dulcian was written and performed by the dulcian virtuoso Bartolomeo Selma y Salaverde (1595-1638). Johann Pezel (1639-1694) brought together the Baroque trumpet and dulcian as solo instruments. He composed a unique set of sonatas, possibly the only example in this genre.
